About Us

What are “Natural Helpers?”

Natural Helpers is a peer-helping program that is used across the United States and in several other countries. It is used in some Middle Schools and many High Schools for students who want to strengthen their communications, use helping skills, provide support for others and help within/out of the school community.

Why do we have “Natural Helpers?”

Natural Helpers is an alternative group of people to help rather then adults. When students have a problem, they generally go to their peers first as opposed to an adult. People may seek Natural Helpers out for advice, assistance or just a sympathetic ear.

What qualifies a “Natural Helper?”

Natural Helpers are generally nominated by the faculty in the school. Natural Helpers have strong moral foundations and have an ambition to help within the school community. Natural Helpers also strive to make an impact in the community outside of the school.

Does “Natural Helper’s” require any outside training?

Of course! Natural Helpers go on a retreat in a camp-like setting for two days and one night. Here, they cover various topics and participate in a number of activities such as role plays to improve their knowledge.

What benefits do people get being “Natural Helpers?”

Natural Helpers learn skills that are beneficial in everyday life when people deal with friends, teachers, family or co-workers. Natural Helpers make new friends within the program to break down some of the barriers that exist in any community.

You’ve convinced me…How can I apply to become a “Natural Helper?”

Natural Helper applications come only once a year generally between January-February. If you would like an application at this time, please see Mrs. Hart in room 224. Those who were nominated by teachers will receive an application in homeroom. If you are not nominated, you may still apply!

What is the application process?

In order to apply, you have to fill out some questions and have an interview with the officers. You must also submit a copy of your report card as well as three recommendations.
